John Birch and I just received word today for the NEW Prefab Sprout album, which will be called "Crimson / Red".
It was speculated that the album was in fact the mysterious "Devil Came A-Calling". And that certainly made perfect sense, since there is a song on the album with that title. Other possibilities might have been "Trapdoor Melancholy," which was another title mentioned by Paddy McAloon some years back. Still, I was delighted to find that all of us adoring Sprout fans had guessed wrong, and course, there was no way anyone could have honestly guessed "Crimson / Red". As to it's meaning? That remains a mystery, but Mr. McAloon does make reference to the title in the song "Adolescence", which also resides on the new album. I must tell you, I've heard the album many times now, and it is truly one of the best Prefab Sprout albums to date. The lyrics are superb, master-class and unmatched by any other song-writer on the planet. The music is sublime, catchy and perfectly crafted to the lyrical mood of the song.
Each sprout record is quite different from the other, and as a long time fan I can honestly say that "I love them all". But, this collection of songs is quite special, and I think that many old and new fans will really get excited about it. Best album of the year? YES! In my opinion.
I am in love with Crimson / Red.
At the moment .... the power of Prefab Sprout reaches out and stops the savagery. At least they do for me.
